The Department Cesare Beccaria (section of Canon and Ecclesiastical Law) is the most important Italian centre for the study of law and religion. It has an academic staff of about 15 persons and it provides courses in Church and State, Canon law, Jewish law, Islamic law, Comparative law of religions. It is the head-office of ICLARS (International Consortium for Law and Religion Studies), a world-wide association of scholars of law and religion. The Department publishes a journal (Quaderni di diritto e politica ecclesiastica) and an electronic collection of papers (Stato e Chiese: www.statoechiese.it).

 

The research team is constituted by highly qualified researchers, whose abilities cover different areas. Prof. Silvio Ferrari is professor of Law and Religion and he is the second Deputy Leader of the Consortium, he will therefore also be a member of WP1, Management , and he will be the leader of WP5, The Public Space. Prof. Alessandro Ferrari wrote extensively on religion and secularism, focusing on the school system in Italy and France; Dr. Cristiana Cianitto is an expert of the relations between law and religion in the United Kingdom, where she prepared her PhD on the legal status of the Church of England in the English legal system; Dr. Sabrina Pastorelli is research fellow at the Institute of International Law - section of Ecclesiastical and Canon Law - University of Milan.
