Rik Torfs is professor of law and canon law at the Universities of Leuven and Stellenbosch. He was the dean of the Faculty of Canon Law (1994-2003, 2004 until today), president (2003) and member of the executive committee (1993-2003) of the European Consortium for Church and State Research. He is a member of the board of the International Academy for Freedom of Religion and Belief (Washington) and a member of the academic advisory board of the International Center for Law and Religious Studies (Brigham Young University Provo).
